This is an ACTION-oriented meeting. Attendants will go away with CONCRETE plans on how to save affirmative action in their own communities. Whether you can help for an hour a month or 8 hours everyday, we will have a job for you. Come if you are a seasoned activist or a concerned citizen!

SPEAK OUT AGAINST POLICE BRUTALITY, RACIAL PROFILING AND THE CRIMINAL INJUSTICE SYSTEM

WHAT: A space for community and campus members to share their stories of police brutality and organize to work for positive change in Ypsilanti

When: Wednesday, April 5, 2006 at noon

Where: EMU (TBA)

Who: Everyone is welcome to listen to speakers and peacefully voice their own concerns about police brutality and social injustice our city. We will end the speak out with a "where forward" planning on how community members can work toward positive change and what you can do if you are a victim of police brutality.

Teaching For Democracy and Justice

What: A conference for activists and teachers, students, parents and community members.

When: Saturday, March 18th from 12:30 to 5:30 pm

Where: EMU campus, location TBA

In these reactionary times it is important for Activists, Educators, and others who care about children, democracy, and the environment to build alliances. This conference will explore both local and global issues and how they relate to issues of justice. We will also explore innovative teaching techniques and issues related to education.

Topics include socialization for democracy, youth, violence and education, feminism in the class room, eco-justice, globalization, and radical teachers' coalition building.

Join us for an afternoon of teaching and learning the strategies of radical democracy: learning, teaching and creating a more democratic society.

FROM BIRMINGHAM TO BELFAST: The Long Reach of the African-American Civil Rights Movement

What: An evening with Patricia Campbell, Irish Civil Rights Activist

When: Tuesday, February 21st from 6:30 to 8:30 PM

Where: The Carillon Room 301 in the Eastern Michigan University Halle Library

In the late 1960’s young Irish women and men entered segregated streets blocked by bigots, police and attack dogs to Bravely march the dangerous roads of apartheid and repression to demand Civil and Human Rights in the land of their birth. their songs, tactics and inspiration were directly influenced by the Civil Rights movement and the struggle for African American liberation.

In Celebration of Black History Month we are honored to have the longtime Irish Civil Rights activist and militant campaigner for Irish freedom, Patricia Campbell of Belfast, visit EMU’s Campus to discuss the profound impact the US Civil Rights Movement had on the modern history of Ireland and the continuing struggle there. Patricia will be presenting the rare film “Off Our Knees” on the Irish Civil Rights Movement followed by questions and discussion. All are welcome!

Candle Light Vigil for 2000th Casualty

The Ann Arbor Coalition Against the War will by holding a candle-light vigil tomorrow (WEDNESDAY) at 7 pm right in front of the Federal Building at 5th Ave. & Liberty (in downtown Ann Arbor).

This action is in keeping with the national call, which identified that vigils should happen the day AFTER the 2000th casualty in the Iraq war is reached.

However, the "peaceworks" group in Ann Arbor is doing it tonight (Tuesday) at 6:30 pm at East University and South University corner.

discuss his book, "Beyond Chutzpah: On the Misuse of Anti-Semitism and the Abuse of History."

Thursday, October 27, at the Palmer Commons, 100 Washtenaw Ave, Great Lakes Room, at 7pm. Suggested donation is $8 but it is not mandatory.

Also, he will be appearing earlier, at 4pm, at The Planet (1112 1/2 S. University, above Village Apothecary) for a book signing.

Finkelstein's book discredits "The Case for Israel" by Alan Dershowitz as a fraud--not only for presenting false facts, but for having plagiarized them from a previous book that has been discredited. But much more than that--it exposes an unmistakable pattern of the corruption of scholarship on the Israel-Palestine conflict.

What: Teach-In Against the Occupation
When: Monday September 26th, 10 am to 7pm
Where: Eastern Michigan University: The Halle Library and McKinney Union
Who: All campus and community members and activists are welcomed, invited and encouraged to come join in this day of education and activism

As leaders in our community, it is our responsibility to inform our families, neighbors, and friends of the lies and horrors of the occupation. It is our duty to connect the dots between wanton military spending and the lack of educational resources and healthcare in our communities. It is our duty to connect the dots between US imperialism's policies and racism, sexism, and religious intolerance around the globe. It is our duty to recognize, raise our voices in opposition, and change the problems in our community, country and world. We are leaders in our community. We form the anti-war movement for Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti. We are the anti-war movement: You are the anti-war movement and I am the anti-war movement. We need to move, we need to step-up, we need act. If we don't, who will?

As more and more people have begun to question, to oppose and become active against the US occupation in Iraq a new anti-war movement is taking shape across the country. Join students, faculty, members of the community and activists for a day-long speak out and teach-in on the occupation of Iraq. September 26th, 10am-7pm at the Bruyce T. Halle library at Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, Michigan.

Workshops, pleneries, and discussions on the many aspects of US policy in the Middle East and the wider "War on Terrorism" including the terrible costs of the war at home. Discussions on GI resistance, the economy of war, women in the "New" Iraq, civil liberties and the burgeoining counter-recruitment movement across the country.

Speakers include local and national activists:

US Labor Against the War (USLAW)
Matt Siegfried, writer for Counterpunch, Z Magazine and the Irish Republican journal Fourthwrite
David Finkle, editor of Against the Current Magazine
Karen Schaumann, EMU professor and activist speaking on The War at Home: The War on the Poor

Some of the long-term goals for the teach-in include :

To connect the dots between imperialist policies to inform our families, neighbors, and friends of the lies and horrors of the occupation
To connect the dots between wanton military spending and the lack of educational, healthcare and other resources in our communities
To connect the dots between US imperialism's policies and racism, sexism, and religious intolerance around the globe
To recognize, raise our voices in opposition, and change the problems in our community, country and world
To act in solidarity with the many college and university campuses holding student strikes against university military and weapons research and spending
To build stronger ties among labor, welfare rights, anti-war, minority, anti-racist, and other progressive groups in our community
To build a strong local anti-war movement
